A Book Review: Rose History

 Ok, it is actually two books, one subject: the history of roses. The books are Rosa the story of the rose, and The Rose.

The difference?

 

The difference between these two pictures?

Water. The picture on the top was before I watered it after not watering for 3 days of 90 plus degree days. 

The picture on the  bottom is a few hours later.

Plants can tell you what is going on with them.

Just as a heads up, too much water can cause plants to droop as well, so it is wise to make sure that your soil isn't saturated before you add more water.

Comparison of Abraham Darby, William Morris and Marianne

 William Morris and Marianne are offspring of Abraham Darby. Abraham Darby has several offspring, but these are the only 2 that I have. William Morris is a David Austin English rose like Abraham Darby; Marianne is a spring blooming new Gallica rose. In my yard Marianne is significantly bigger than either Abraham Darby, but this is the 2nd summer for it compared to the first summer for Abraham Darby and William Morris. My William Morris is an own root plant that is probably 6 months old and the bloom will change with age.

This last one is from the same Abraham Darby bush, early spring and prior to me transplanting the bush due to the blasted rabbits.

Father Hugo's Rose versus Rosa xanthina spontanea

Father Hugo's Rose, Rosa hugonis, the top picture, and Rosa xanthina spontanea, the bottom picture. These roses are once blooming, single and yellow. The leaves are very similar. I have only had them in my yard for the 2021 growing season.  So far, in my yard the differences between these have been the height of the bush and the thornyness. Father Hugo's Rose, so far has been shorter and has more thorns. Neither have bloomed, and I don't expect either will until next spring. As a side note, another name for Father Hugo's Rose is Rosa xanthina f. hugonis. This means that these two roses are closely related. It will be interesting to see how they compare with each other. More to come next year.

The chicken wire is for protection against rabbits.

 

Rose buds and partly open rose buds

 Sometimes it is the rose buds that gets over looked by the roses. I was noticing how the partly open bud on Screaming Neon Red looked compared to the open flowers. I'm going to take pictures next spring to show the buds of the European old garden roses and the species roses flower buds as a comparison.
