The building of a rose garden
I started my rose garden here in Missouri in April of 2020. The roses I started with were Safrano, Monsieur Tillier, both Tea roses; Ellen Tofflemire, Marianne, Tuscany Superb, all Gallica roses; and a rose that I had yet to see bloom coming from a cutting. The last rose struggled all summer and wound up dying due the February 2021 freeze. Over the course of the summer the rose total got added to by Duchesses be Brabant, a Tea rose; Abraham Darby, a David Austin English rose, Rise n Shine, a miniature rose that the rabbits ate to nothing and a rugosa rose, which the rabbits ate as well. I did add a few more roses in late fall, winter and spring with a few more in the future.
When I planted the original 10 or so roses I put them in the grass and just mowed around them. I did eventually add mulch to the area, along with a bench, and summer annuals. The below pictures are from when I first added the summer annuals to the main rose garden, I have a few in a couple of areas elsewhere in the yard. The pictures are also of tonight with the roses blooming in it. I plan on updating this as my rose garden blooms and grows.

Spring in Missouri
Some of the roses blooming for me this spring. Top to bottom: Ellen Tofflemire bred by Paul Barden, Marianne bred by Paul Barden and Tuscany Superb
Ellen Tofflemire and Marianne are both recent additions to the Gallica class of roses. The Gallica class is one of the European old garden roses classes. Tuscany Superb is a Gallica rose as well, but was bred pre 1837.
I guess that you can call Ellen Tofflemire and Marianne new old garden roses.

Almost Thanksgiving and still going strong
Monsieur Tillier, a Tea rose introduced in 1891. This is currently in a zone 6 location so we will see how it handles the winter.

After heat, storms, and cooler weather
July was really hot. Most of the 6 roses just sat and did nothing. August started a little cooler and then had a few storms. The storms are gone, temperatures have cooled down. Here is a couple of happy rose bushes.

Starting over
So it has been awhile since last post. After nearly two years of not posting, plus moving from a house to an apartment and back into a house here goes starting over. This time though it is in the Midwest and in zone 6 instead of zone 8. I brought 6 roses with me from Oregon to Missouri. We will see how they do.
Here's to starting over from Safrano:

A couple of found roses at night
A couple of roses from cuttings from around Salem. The pictures are at night because in the day they get washed out. The top two pictures are the same rose. It blooms throughout the summer when it has adequate water. It opens a whitish color with light pink on the edges. The pink darkens and the flowers eventually age to a pink and whitish color.
The bottom picture is a different rose. This is only the second bloom that it has gotten. It is too young to say for sure but I believe that this would fit into a perpetual category. The super light pink color is there when otopens, and doesn't seem to fade or strengthen. The plant seems to want to grow more than flowee. If I remember right the mother plant, or the one the cutting came from, was in the 6 foot tall range.
